The Seven Lucky Gods of Japan are widely revered in folklore. Each of the seven circular patterns in the design represents a different deity. Daikokuten, the god of the kitchen, wields a wooden mallet and commands mice as his messengers. Ebisu, the god of business, is depicted with a fishing rod capturing sea bream. Bishamonten is the god of warriors, holding a pagoda and a treasure club. Benten, the only female deity, cradles a biwa (Japanese lute) and stands on a lotus flower. Hotei, the jovial monk with a large belly and a palm-leaf fan, symbolizes good fortune. Fukurokuju, Jurojin, and their companions, the crane and the deer respectively, are gods of longevity. Legend has it that they sail on a treasure ship shaped like a dragon, bringing blessings, wealth, health, and good fortune to all.
